National Research on LGBTQIA+ Inclusion in Spain: Realities from the South and the Canary Islands<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

As part of the transnational initiative Youth Workers Across the Mediterranean Sea<\/strong>, youth participants from Southern Spain and the Canary Islands<\/strong> have explored the levels of inclusion and exclusion experienced by LGBTQIA+ individuals<\/strong> in their territories. Their findings reflect both meaningful social progress and the persistence of systemic challenges\u2014especially for young people, those in rural areas, and individuals seeking mental health support<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Repression to Rights: A National Overview<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Spain has evolved into one of the most progressive countries in the world regarding LGBTQIA+ rights, but this transformation came after decades of repression. Under Franco’s dictatorship, homosexuality was considered a crime and a social threat. The Ley de Peligrosidad y Rehabilitaci\u00f3n Social (1970)<\/strong> marked a dark era in which LGBTQIA+ people were imprisoned, sent to \u201crehabilitation\u201d centers, or confined to remote prisons such as Tef\u00eda<\/strong> in Fuerteventura\u2014now a symbol of memory and reparation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Key turning points included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  • The partial decriminalization of homosexuality in 1979,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The full reform of the Penal Code in 1995,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • The landmark Equal Marriage Law in 2005<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • And the more recent Trans Law (2021)<\/strong> which affirms gender self-determination.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Despite these milestones, legal equality does not always guarantee lived equality<\/strong>, particularly for young and marginalized LGBTQIA+ people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    The Canary Islands: Between Tourism, Activism, and Rural Struggles<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    In the Canary Islands<\/strong>, the LGBTQIA+ movement experienced delayed visibility, with activism taking root in the 1990s through associations like GAM\u00c1<\/strong> (Gran Canaria) and Diversas<\/strong> (Tenerife). These groups played a vital role in raising awareness, promoting sexual health, and fighting stigma. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Maspalomas, in Gran Canaria, emerged as a global LGTBIQ+ tourism hub in the 2000s, contributing to visibility and economic growth. Events like Maspalomas Pride<\/strong> and Winter Pride<\/strong> have helped normalize queer identities\u2014although concerns about commercialisation remain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    \n

    In recent years, institutional efforts have significantly increased:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    – The Canarian Trans Law (2021) goes beyond national legislation in affirming gender identity.
    – The Canarian Strategy for Gender Equality and Diversity 2022\u20132026 includes specific action plans for LGBTQIA+ inclusion.
    – New support networks have extended to smaller islands such as La Palma and Lanzarote, marking progress in decentralizing support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


    Still, challenges persist, especially in non-urban settings. Young LGBTQIA+ people in the Canary Islands\u2014particularly in rural or conservative areas\u2014face bullying, social rejection, and limited access to health and psychological support.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Andalusia: Mental Health and the Urban-Rural Divide<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    In Granada<\/strong>, a cultural and academic hub in Andalusia, the LGBTQIA+ community continues to confront high rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation<\/strong>. Studies show that 32.1% of LGBTQIA+ individuals<\/strong> report suicidal thoughts\u2014more than double the national average<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Major barriers include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Limited safe spaces<\/strong> to discuss psychological struggles openly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Lack of healthcare professionals<\/strong> trained in LGBTQIA+ issues, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    \n

    Discrimination within medical services<\/strong>, with 46% reporting some form of mistreatment, <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Limited safe spaces<\/strong> to discuss psychological struggles openly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Local initiatives, such as those led by Andaluc\u00eda Diversidad LGBT<\/strong> and university-based programs, have created essential support structures. Yet, these resources remain inconsistent and under-publicized<\/strong>, especially outside urban areas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Rural Realities Across Regions<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    Across both Andalusia and the Canary Islands, rural LGBTQIA+ individuals face unique and compounded challenges<\/strong>. While urban centers offer increasing acceptance and specialized services, life in small towns and isolated areas often involves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    • Living in secrecy due to family and community stigma, <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Lack of anonymity and safe spaces,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • Greater exposure to conversion narratives or psychological pressure to conform,<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • And scarcity of trained mental health providers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

      Coming out in these environments can still result in social ostracism or emotional trauma<\/strong>, particularly for youth who rely on their families for support and housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The lack of local, visible, and culturally competent support means that young rural LGBTQIA+ individuals often face a double exclusion<\/strong>\u2014from broader society and from urban LGBTQIA+ networks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

      The findings of this research point to\u00a0urgent needs<\/strong>\u00a0and actionable proposals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Educational campaigns<\/strong> to fight stigma and normalise diversity across all territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Training for healthcare and educational professionals<\/strong> on LGBTQIA+ realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Expansion of inclusive mental health services<\/strong>, with outreach to rural and island communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Creation of safe, visible spaces<\/strong> for LGBTQIA+ youth to access support without fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Increased funding and visibility for grassroots organizations<\/strong>, particularly those working outside large cities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

      Progress with Gaps Still to Fill<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Spain has undoubtedly made great strides in the legal and social recognition of LGBTQIA+ rights. Yet, the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals in Southern Spain and the Canary Islands<\/strong>\u2014especially in rural or less visible contexts\u2014reveal ongoing challenges<\/strong> related to mental health, access to care, and cultural inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      This research, conducted as part of the Youth Workers Across the Mediterranean Sea<\/em> project, highlights the importance of intersectional, youth-driven perspectives<\/strong> in shaping future policy and action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      By amplifying local voices, especially from non-central regions, we take one step closer to an inclusive future\u2014where no one is left behind<\/strong> because of where they live or who they are.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
